The original deck railing was built and stuccoed as a continuation of the house walls. As is unfortunately too common with this type of stuccoed parapet wall sundeck, water infiltration due to an woefully inadequate wall cap rots the wall from the inside out. As a result the walls took about 15 minutes to completely demolish- they were basically a stucco crust surrounding mold and dust. The rest of the deck was awkwardly laid out and poorly built and was also disposed of quickly. The new sundeck provided a large covered area underneath for play during the rainy winter months and the glass railings made it easy to watch over the kids playing from inside the house and enjoy the view of the hills beyond. A new simpler stair made for a less cluttered layout.
